What’s New in the ICING-PSICS?

This database gives information about selected properties of the isocapnic hyperventilation manoeuvre (IHVM) in healthy adult humans. More than 80 infants, aged 22–39 weeks postnatal, were ventilated for 15–16 min with IHVMs. The main parameter investigated was the lower respiratory rate (LRR), the opening of the mouth (M), the ribcage to abdominal circumference ratio (R:A), and the gastric pressure (Pga). Variables were measured in time, relative and absolute values were compared between the IHVMs and the spontaneous breathing. Additionally, the degree of concordance between these variables was investigated. The LRR, M, Pga and the R:A ratio were significantly higher in the IHVMs than in the spontaneous breathing and the concordance between these variables was excellent for all time intervals studied. Neither the spontaneously breathing nor the IHVMs resulted in any clinical significant change in the breathing pattern of the infants (Pga).

The sampling scheme we used was to initiate the recording of Pga at the same time and for the same duration as the initiation of the IHVMs. We have seen that the Pga measured by this protocol is very similar to values obtained after the IHVMs.

Using the curve-fitting function of Unistats analysis software, we have found that the LRR decreases linearly with the time in spontaneous breathing, but does so in a sigmoidal manner in IHVMs. The LRR decreased slightly after the IHVMs in every spontaneous breathing episode.

The M depends inversely on Pga, the R:A on Pga and the LRR. All these relations are valid for spontaneous breathing as well as for IHVMs.

Functional autocalibration is a tool that allows one to automatically compensate for errors induced by instrumentation, motion artifacts, or thermal drift in the measurements of the cardiovascular parameters and ventilatory efficiency.
